The primary goal of four-year college foreign language departments is to prepare students to communicate with others in an ever-changing world. They also offer teacher training to secondary or community college instructors via a master’s program or a secondary teaching credential.

CSU Fresno Remarks:
No credit will be allowed for a course if a student has previously passed (grade of "D" or higher) a more advanced course in the same foreign language. Spanish majors who have studied Spanish in high school or who by culture or experience can speak Spanish at a certain level of proficiency must consult with a Spanish advisor to determine which required lower-division courses, if any, may be waived. Spanish majors who are eligible to enroll immediately in a Span 1B, 2A, 2B, 4A-B, 5 or an upper-division Spanish course are not required to make up the lower-division units waived. Waiver of required units for the Spanish major does not reduce the total number of units required for the awarding of the bachelor's degree.
